Who can behold Florella's charms?, Z441
The setting is a late one, headed in the first book of Deliciae Musicae (published in May 1695) as having been sung by ‘Mrs Siball’ (Colley Cibber). The song is full of delightful harmonic details. ‘One glance from her’ rises expectantly and falls beautifully as ‘my soul disarms’; two extended melismas on ‘glory’ and ‘triumph’ dominate the second half without detracting from Purcell’s charming melody.
