Spite of the godhead, pow'rful love, Z417

Vinculum Societatis I, 1687
author of text

The first volume of Vinculum Societatis (1687) contained two songs by Purcell, Let formal lovers and Spite of the godhead, a setting of a poem by Anne Wharton. Purcell’s melody illustrates the lady’s tormented, hidden love for Philemon with angular intervals, but the ending has hope, for she will (if he should ‘Once take thy injur’d part’) put her pride aside, and declare her true love for him.
