He himself courts his own ruin, Z372
The lutesong-like setting was published in 1684 in Playford and Carr’s fifth book of Choice Ayres. Purcell sets the author’s wry view of courtship in two strophic verses, full of delightfully unpredictable melodic and harmonic turns.
