This is an early song, published in 1679 in Playford’s delayed second volume of Choice Ayres and Songs. Amintas is ignoring Celia, who nonetheless vows to remain constant, ready to leap into the breach when her would-be lover is jilted by ‘some inconstant maid’. Purcell’s simple strophic setting is delightfully tuneful.
