This is an early song, published in 1679 in Playford’s delayed second volume of Choice Ayres and Songs
. Amintas is ignoring Celia, who nonetheless vows to remain constant, ready to leap into the breach when her would-be lover is jilted by ‘some inconstant maid’. Purcell’s simple strophic setting is delightfully tuneful.
