When first my shepherdess and I, Z431
This song was published in 1687 in the fourth book of The Theatre of Music. The story is that of a two-timing shepherdess who professes her undying devotion to Damon (utilizing the oft-used double entendre on ‘die’) but all too soon meets another stock pastoral figure, Myrtillo. Despite her protests, Damon realizes that she is two-timing him. The poet adds a wicked final comment!
