Phillis, talk no more of passion, Z409
Purcell’s attractive setting appeared in Playford’s second book of The Theatre of Music in 1685. Phillis is all talk and no action. Although Purcell’s setting of the two verses is basically strophic, there are a number of melodic variations between the two verses, not least in the continuo link which joins the two stanzas. The refrain ‘Honour that so oft you mention’ (‘Fame and honour’ in verse two) is especially rich in its harmony.
