Beware, poor shepherds 'The Caution', Z361

composer
Choice Ayres V, 1684
author of text

Purcell’s setting of ‘Beware, poor shepherds’, subtitled ‘The Caution’, appeared in the fifth book of Choice Ayres in 1684. The subject this time is Lelia (though this might have been a misprint for Celia or even Delia) and warns of her two-timing; she will ‘give you hopes of bliss’ and even ‘seal it with a kiss’, but all shepherds are advised, ‘By thinking on my pain’, to avoid her.
