Allah
George Chadwick’s 1887 setting of Longfellow’s poem offers the soul an alternative to Khayyám’s oblivion—the hope of joining Allah’s light. Chadwick was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1854 and died in Boston in 1931. He was a prolific composer of operas, oratorios, chamber music and song, and was a pillar of the ‘Boston Classicists’ composers at the turn of the century.
