Memories: (A) Very Pleasant; (B) Rather Sad (1897) is quite a virtuoso performance. In the first section (marked ‘as fast as it will go’) Ives evokes the excitement of a night at the opera (including whistling), while the second is a concentrated exercise in nostalgia – and in the power of a simple tune (including humming).
