Der Herbstabend, Op 8 No 2
Like Lachner’s, Vesque's songs need re-appraisal; unlike the far more conservative Bavarian, Vesque was drawn to greater modernity of expression. It is curious that someone who had been so highly thought-of in Vienna should be completely unknown today. He was aware that it was not possible to bask in the technical certainties of the golden days of his youth. Some of his later music seems to be straining towards an acknowledgement of such composers as Wagner, without renouncing the relationship of words to music, and that of voice to accompaniment, that had been nurtured by Schubert.
