This delightful Singspiel aria is reminiscent of some of the mildly risqué and erotic German songs of Haydn. Beethoven's Der Kuss also comes to mind. There is a cheeky piquant quality here that has more to do with the eighteenth century (Hogarth and Tom Jones) than with German romanticism. The predatory nature of the flirtation is shown by the drawn-out note on the final 'Lass … dich küssen': it is the springboard off which the pouncing pianist is propelled into action (on the singer's behalf) in the tiny postlude.
