Excetre’s Credo is one of the first settings to contrast two- and three-voice sections, a feature which soon became normal in English Mass movements. Though nothing is known for certain about the composer, the work is entirely consistent with the main repertory of the Old Hall Manuscript.

Plus substantiel, peut-être, le Credo d’Excetre qui, en dehors de son caractère mélodique et rythmique plus développé, est l’un des premiers à mettre en opposition des sections à deux et trois voix, ce qui se fit bientôt couramment dans les mouvements de messe anglais. Bien qu’on ne sache rien de ces compositeurs, ces deux œuvres correspondent totalement au répertoire principal du manuscrit.

Etwas gehaltvoller vielleicht ist das Credo von Excetre, das neben seiner größeren melodischen und rhythmischen Originalität eine der ersten Vertonungen ist, in denen zwei- und dreistimmige Passagen einander gegenübergestellt werden—dieses Stilmittel sollte in englischen Messvertonungen schon bald zur Norm werden. Obwohl über diese beiden Komponisten nichts bekannt ist, entsprechen beide Werke gänzlich dem Hauptrepertoire des Manuskripts.
