Born in New Jersey, Ernest Schelling studied with Paderewski for several years in the 1890s. The Impressionistic
Nocturne (Ragusa), bearing the dedication ‘To my master, I. J. Paderewski’, is at times reminiscent of Debussy’s
La mer. Published in 1926, it was later recorded by Paderewski on Victor Records.
