Camille Saint-Säens, who travelled to Weimar in 1877 to attend a production of his opera Samson et Dalila conducted by Lassen, composed his Allegro appassionato Op 43 for cello and piano or orchestra in 1873 and dedicated it to the French cellist Jules Lasserre.
