George Gershwin was given to writing his orchestral pieces for piano and orchestrating them later. This Promenade was originally intended for the ‘walking the dog’ sequence in the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film, Shall we Dance? in 1936, and is Gershwin’s last instrumental composition.

George Gershwin avait tendance à écrire ses œuvres orchestrales pour piano et à les orchestrer ensuite. Cette Promenade, initialement destinée à la séquence de la «promenade du chien» dans le film de Fred Astaire et Ginger Rogers, Shall we Dance? George Gershwin hatte die Angewohnheit, seine Orchesterwerke für Klavier zu schreiben und sie erst später zu orchestrieren. Die vorliegende Promenade war ursprünglich für eine Szene (den Spaziergang mit Hund) in dem Spielfilm Shall we Dance? (Deutscher Verleihtitel: Tanz mit mir) von 1936 mit Fred Astaire und Ginger Rogers vorgesehen und ist Gershwins letztes Instrumentalwerk.
