The Romance oubliée
resulted from a publisher’s request to be permitted to reprint an earlier Romance, itself a transcription of Liszt’s little-known song Ô pourquoi donc
. Liszt turned down the request and sent instead a refashioning of the material—now a nostalgic glance at times past, in the same spirit as his four Valses oubliées
—in four versions: for viola, violin or cello and piano, as well as for solo piano.
