Ilmenau sets one of Goethe’s most famous lyrics, in German, providing it, as an alternative, with a translation into English by Harmony. Ives dated it 1902 in
114 Songs but it was probably composed earlier. With its simple, largely chordal accompaniment, it is an utterance of piercing lyricism.
