This second disc of Bartók's piano music from Tiberghien redoubles the grace intensity and inventiveness of his April release, centred on Mikrokosmos Book 6. From the familiar Romanian Folk Dances through the 14 Bagatelles to the 18 educational pieces of Mikrokosmos 5, one cannot mistake Bartók's ability to invest the shortest item with the largest consequence. Magic moments are plentiful: the haunting bitonal arpeggios of Boating, or the inner ostinato of the fifth (Vivo) Bagatelle. One feels the weight of Tiberghien's thought in every phrase, yet the sense of easy flow is paramount.
