The elegiac nature of these pieces was occasioned by the death of Prince Henry in 1612. Composers of the day such as Robert Ramsey and Thomas Vautor responded with grief-laden part-songs and madrigals. The music is first-rate and Gallicantus creates an affecting picture of a nation in mourning with singing of textural and verbal clarity, suppleness and poignancy.
