Symphony No 84 may not be distinguished by a nickname, but its individuality is no less apparent than in its companions. The expectant Largo introduction and delightfully varied Allegro are followed by a set of variations on a 6/8 theme with Haydn again making the most of his wind instruments—towards the end of the Andante they achieve independence from the strings in a brief but effective pizzicato-accompanied passage. A gutsy Minuet and spirited finale complete the work.

La Symphonie No 84 n’a peut-être pas de surnom, mais son individualité n’est pas moins apparente que celle des deux autres. L’introduction Largo expectante et l’Allegro délicieusement varié précèdent une série de variations sur un thème en 6/8, où Haydn tire encore le plus grand avantage de ses instruments à vent—vers la fin de l’Andante ils se libèrent des cordes dans un passage bref mais frappant, sur un accompagnement pizzicato. Un énergique Menuet et un finale fougueux complètent la symphonie.

Die Sinfonie Nr. 84 mag nicht durch einen Beinamen ausgezeichnet worden sein, doch ist ihre Individualität nicht weniger offensichtlich als die ihrer Gegenstücke. Der erwartungsvollen Largo-Introduktion und dem herrlich abwechslungsreichen Allegro folgt eine Reihe von Variationen über ein Thema im 6/8-Takt, wobei Haydn wiederum das Beste aus seiner Bläsergruppe herausholt—gegen Ende des Andante erlangen sie in einer kurzen aber wirkungsvollen Passage mit Pizzicato-Begleitung Unabhängigkeit von den Streichern. Ein forsches Menuett und ein schwungvolles Finale beschließen das Werk.
