The oft-cited Melodie in Dorische Tonart consists simply of the two themes from Totentanz which come from a version of the burial service; the chants also appear in open score on a leaf at the Goethe-Schiller Archive marked 'Prose des morts' (no musical connection with the piece to which we have given that title in the first cycle of Harmonies poétiques).

La Melodie in Dorische Tonart, souvent citée, comprend simplement les deux thèmes de Totentanz, issus d’une version du service funèbre; les psalmodies apparaissent également, dans une partition aux parties séparées, sur une feuille conservée aux Goethe-Schiller Archive et marquée «Prose des morts» (sans rapport musical avec la pièce à laquelle nous avons donné ce titre dans le premier cycle des Harmonies poétiques).
