The reputation of Francesco Geminiani (1687–1762) has always been overshadowed by those of Corelli (of whom he was a pupil), Vivaldi and Handel, but he was one of the finest violinists of his time and wrote much worthwhile and original music. He lived most of his life in London where he arrived in 1714 (though he ended his days, and is buried, in Dublin). In 1726/7 Geminiani published two sets of concerti grossi arranged from Corelli’s Opus 5, which of course included ‘La Folia’. In Geminiani’s setting Corelli’s virtuoso violin part is mostly unchanged, but a second solo violin part is ingeniously added and the whole work is shaped by the contrast between tutti and solo.

Francesco Geminiani (1687–1762) a toujours vu sa réputation éclipsée par Corelli (dont il fut l’élève), Vivaldi et Haendel; il fut pourtant l’un des meilleurs violonistes de son époque, qui composa une musique originale et digne d’intérêt. Il vécut en majeure partie à Londres, où il s’installa en 1714 (même s’il finit ses jours, et fut inhumé, à Dublin). En 1726/7, il publia deux corpus de concerti grossi arrangés d’après l’op.5 de Corelli et incluant, bien sûr, «La Folia». Dans cette version, la partie violonistique virtuose de Corelli est en grande partie inchangée, mais une seconde partie de violon solo est ingénieusement ajoutée, et l’oeuvre entière repose sur les contrastes entre tutti et solo.

Der Ruf von Francesco Geminiani (1687–1762) ist immer von Corelli, dessen Schüler er war, Vivaldi und Händel überschattet worden. Er war allerdings einer der besten Geigenspieler seiner Zeit und schrieb etliche wertvolle und originelle Stücke. Er lebte fast sein ganzes Leben lang in London, wo er 1714 ankam (obwohl er in Dublin seine Tage beschloß und auch begraben ist). 1726/7 veröffentlichte Geminiani zwei Sätze der Concerti Grossi, arrangiert aus Corellis Opus 5, welches natürlich auch „La Folia“ einschloß. Gemiani behält in seiner Interpretation den virtuosen Geigenteil von Corelli fast vollständig bei, fügt ihm allerdings einen zweiten Sologeigenteil auf geniale Weise bei das Gesamtwerk ist durch den Kontrast zwischen Tutti und Solo geformt.

Pasó casi toda su vida en Londres, a donde llegó en 1714 (aunque terminó sus días en Dublín, donde está enterrado). En 1726/7 Geminiani publicó dos series de concerti grossi arreglados de la Opus 5 de Corelli, entre los que naturalmente se incluía ‘La Folia’. En la composición de Geminiani, la parte virtuosa de violín de Corelli permanece casi intacta, pero con la ingeniosa adición de un segundo solo de violín; toda la obra está confomada por el contraste entre todos y solista.
