The form of this little work is an ABCC quatrain, familiar from song forms and found in such pieces as Wilson’s Wilde and The Mayden’s songe. It is titled Corranto in the FVB and Jigg in the second source, which contains only the first sixteen bars. These opening bars are possibly an arrangement by Byrd of a pre-existant instrumental song or dance tune. On the other hand, the second half is clearly his own variation on this melody and is designed specifically for keyboard. It is played here simply on the 4’ stop of the harpsichord (at the upper octave), giving it a lightness well suited to its texture.

La forme de cette petite pièce est un quatrain “ABCC”, connue des chansons populaires et des pièces comme Wilson’s Wilde et The Mayden’s songe. Le titre est Corranto dans le FVB et Jigg dans la seconde source, qui ne contient que les seize premières mesures. En effet, peut-être ces premières mesures ne sont-elles qu’un arrangement de Byrd d’une mélodie bien connue à l’époque. La seconde partie, en revanche, présente clairement sa variation originale, bien conçue pour le clavier. L’œuvre est jouée ici sur le jeu de 4’ du clavecin (à l’octave supérieure), ce qui lui confère la légèreté appropriée.
