Nocturne No 10 in E minor is ferociously intense, built chiefly from its opening syncopated motif and a terse accompanying figure. Unlike some of the earlier nocturnes, it concentrates on a single idea, like a Baroque ‘Affekt’. It’s intriguing that Fauré, who usually wrote slowly, sketched out this piece in just two days.
