Fauré’s opera Pénélope was completed in 1912 and its score haunts Barcarolle No 11 in G minor, composed the following year: the opera’s love motif is quoted in the development of its main theme. The piece’s exotic, rarefied flavour is enhanced by the Mixolydian mode with its flattened seventh.

Fauré acheva son opéra Pénélope en 1912 et cette partition hante la Barcarolle nº 11 en sol mineur, composée l’année suivante: le motif de l’amour de l’opéra est cité dans le développement de son thème principal. Le côté exotique particulièrement recherché de cette pièce est rehaussé par le mode mixolydien avec sa septième bémolisée.

Fauré vollendete seine Oper Pénélope 1912, und ihre Musik hallt wider in der Barcarolle Nr. 11 g-Moll, komponiert im Folgejahr: Das Liebesmotiv aus der Oper wird in der Durchführung des Hauptthemas zitiert. Der exotisch-raffinierte Beiklang des Stücks wird noch betont durch den mixolydischen Modus mit seiner kleinen Septime.
