The spare, unsettling tenth barcarolle—like No 9, in A minor—was a companion piece for Nocturne No 11. In each, Fauré works through material derived from one idea that grows increasingly complex. He releases the pent-up tension in a series of descending harmonies, a favourite technique which he termed a ‘harmonic staircase’.
