In 1896, Fauré became a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire, where his students included George Enescu, Florent Schmitt and Maurice Ravel. A scandal over Ravel’s failure to win the Prix de Rome propelled Fauré into the directorship of the institution in 1905, the year of Barcarolle No 7 in D minor. At least ten years had elapsed since his last barcarolle and his music was growing more exploratory and austere: this work’s streamlined emotional concentration points onward to his late style.
