By 1894, Fauré had visited Venice and written his Cinq mélodies «de Venise», settings of Verlaine. He had also met Emma Bardac and begun their affair. His expanding horizons are evident in the highly original Barcarolle No 5 in F sharp minor, with its characteristic ‘blue note’. Its roving harmonic adventurousness and sense of drama make it one of the most challenging and rewarding of the Barcarolles.
