When Fauré showed his Ballade, Op 19, to Franz Liszt, the great virtuoso tried to sight-read it, then declared: ‘I’ve run out of fingers.’ In Fauré’s B flat major fifth nocturne, rhetorical gestures suggest Liszt’s lingering influence, while the decorative arabesques near the beginning later transform into storm-swept waves.
