O dive custos Auriacae is a fine setting of Henry Parker’s text (itself a clever piece of writing whose references to Oxford and Cambridge might have drawn approving nods from classical scholars) which shows Purcell’s florid and strongly Italianate vocal style, with the voices intertwining jagged melodic intervals amongst passages containing chains of discords.
