Come to me in my dreams is the first of several poems by Matthew Arnold set by Bridge. The poem was probably written in the autumn of 1850; in that summer Arnold had seen his engagement to his future wife Frances Lucy Wightman forbidden by her father and they were only able to renew their correspondence at the end of the year. This implies more sincerity in the poem than some critics have allowed, and Bridge has made a convincing romantic song out of it.
