With the great E minor Prelude and Fugue, BWV548 we return to the small group of late Leipzig pieces. In common with the majority of them, the two movements are designed together (as the autograph shows); the majestic and seamless progress of the prelude’s plethora of ideas contrasts with a da capo fugue whose ‘wedge’-shaped subject is as original as the long virtuoso episode which forms the central section.
