Reviews

‘Just as, in my youth, I almost preferred to lick the scrapings from the bowls in which my mother had prepared cakes than to savout the finished product, so I am tempted almost to prefer these crumbs from the table of a great genius to those stupendous musical feats which are everybody's idea of the real J S Bach. Here is music every bit as worthy of close attention as anything Bach wrote for the organ. Herrick displays immaculate taste. This is playing of the very highest order … superlative artistry’ (Gramophone)

‘An attractive way of gathering up some of Bach's less obvious masterpieces, and they are all splendidly played, and recorded on a fine Swiss organ’ (The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs)

The Fantasia in A minor, BWV561, is another work in the prelude, fugue and postlude mould. The pedals make a very late appearance in the Fugue, whose subject bears a striking resemblance to the second half of that of the ‘Little’ Fugue in G minor, BWV578, and herald the start of the postlude which not only develops figurations from the Prelude but also introduces a rather striking recitative-like idea towards the end of the piece. Again, the lack of an authoritative source casts a certain amount of doubt on its provenance, and certain commentators prefer to see the work’s occasional harmonic awkwardnesses as the work of another hand. Be that as it may, the showiness of the writing, from the striking rising arpeggios at the start to the pedal plunge onto a low D just before the final cadence, makes it particularly effective in performance.
