Reviews

‘Christopher Herrick's runaway success as a recording artist can be explained not simply by his technical brilliance but also by his sympathetic and imaginative approach to individual venues and instruments … This disc will be eagerly added to existing Fireworks collections, and may be savoured by new converts as the musical equivalent of a vintage madeira’ (Classic CD)

‘Though this is a disc absolutely not to be missed by all lovers of the Edwardian organ and its music, I would say that it rises above this narrow musical bracket and is of great musical worth full stop!’ (Organists' Review)
Edwin Lemare was one of the greatest of all the travelling organ virtuosi who flourished in the early years of this century. He was English, born on the Isle of Wight. He might have remained a respectable church organist were it not for a difference of opinion with the Rector of St Margaret's, Westminster, and a colourful marital life. Circumstances forced him to seek his fortune in America, a fortune he both made and lost.

He composed much serious music for the organ, all of it well written and not deserving of the obscurity into which it has fallen. He has never quite been forgotten as the composer of the melody which became 'Moonlight and Roses', and a revival of interest in his music has concentrated on his more popular pieces, just as appealing to recital audiences today as they were when he first played them.

This Concertstück employs the Polish dance form made popular by Chopin, characterized by an all-pervading rhythm, creating what is effectively a Polonaise-Fantasy which abounds in energy and emotion.
