Arthur Pryor (1870–1942) was one of three accomplished musician brothers from St Joseph, Missouri. He became so well known as a trombonist that he was styled the ‘Paganini of the trombone’. He was in turn a leading attraction of the bands of Patrick S Gilmore and John Philip Sousa, whose assistant conductor he became before forming his own band in 1903. Besides marches and trombone solos he composed many dances and novelty pieces, among which The Whistler and his Dog (1905) has proved the most enduring. Besides its extensive solo for the piccolo, it provides the opportunity for a brief but virtuoso demonstration of whistling and barking!

Surnommé le «Paganini du trombone», il fut tour à tour une attraction majeure des orchestres d’harmonie de Patrick S. Gilmore et de John Philip Sousa, dont il devint le chef d’orchestre adjoint avant de former son propre ensemble, en 1903. Auteur de marches et de solos de trombones, il composa aussi de nombreuses danses et nouveautés—dont The Whistler and his Dog (1905), sa pièce la plus durable, qui offre, outre son vaste solo pour le piccolo, l’occasion d’une démonstration, brève mais virtuose, de sifflements et d’aboiements!

Arthur Pryor (1870–1942) war einer der drei vorzüglichen Musikerbrüdern aus St. Joseph im Bundesstaat Missouri. Als Posaunist wurde er so bekannt, daß man ihn als „Paganini der Posaune“ bezeichnete. Er war die größte Attraktion der Bands von Patrick S. Gilmore und John Philip Sousa, dessen assistierender Dirigent er wurde, bevor er 1903 seine eigene Band gründete. Neben Märschen und Posaunensoli komponierte er zahlreiche Tänze und „Novelty Pieces“, von denen sich The Whistler and his Dog (1905) als am dauerhaftesten erwiesen haben. Außer einem langen Pikkolosolo bietet es Gelegenheit für eine kurze, jedoch virtuose Zuschaustellung von Pfeif- und Bellgeräuschen!
