Britten’s commitment to the piano lies essentially in his song-cycles. The official list for solo piano is slender indeed, but since the composer’s death in 1976 the archives have been mined to bring to light a number of early, forgotten pieces. There had been a precedent for this during the composer’s own lifetime. In 1970, at the age of fifty-seven, Britten himself was persuaded to publish Five Waltztes (Waltzes) culled from the enormous number of short piano pieces he had written between 1923 and 1925. As Britten wrote in his Preface to the 1970 Edition:

In 1925 came 10 Waltzes, including a Petite Valse—it seems sad that my French spelling was better than my English. Several of them were written before that, and since the composer was a very ordinary little boy, they are all pretty juvenile (here was no Mozart, I fear). But perhaps they may be useful for the young or inexperienced to practice …

C’est essentiellement à travers ses cycles de mélodies que Britten a écrit pour le piano. La liste officielle des œuvres pour piano seul demeure bien mince, mais depuis le décès du compositeur en 1976, ses archives ont livré au grand jour un certain nombre d’anciens morceaux oubliés. Ce processus avait été amorcé du vivant du compositeur. En 1970, à l’âge de cinquante-sept ans, Britten lui-même fut persuadé de publier Five Walztes choisies parmi le nombre impressionnant des compositions concises qu’il avait écrites pour le piano seul entre 1923 et 1925. Voici ce qu’écrivit Britten dans sa préface à l’édition de 1970:

En 1925 ce sont 10 Waltzes qui virent le jour, dont une Petite Valse—hélas, mon orthographe française était à l’époque meilleure que l’anglaise. Plusieurs de ces valses furent écrites avant cette date, et leur compositeur étant un petit garçon très ordinaire, elles sont toutes plutôt juvéniles (ce n’était pas du Mozart, j’en ai bien peur). Peut-être se révèleront-elles utiles pour les jeunes gens ou les novices désirant s’entraîner …

Brittens Verbundenheit mit dem Klavier kommt vornehmlich in seinen Liederkreisen zum Ausdruck. Die offizielle Liste für Soloklavier ist tatsächlich recht knapp, doch seit dem Tod des Komponisten im Jahre 1976 wurden die Archive durchkämmt und eine Reihe von frühen, längst vergessenen Stücken ans Licht gebracht. Dafür gab es aber schon zu Lebzeiten des Komponisten einen Präzedenzfall: im Alter von siebenundfünfzig Jahren hatte sich Britten 1970 dazu überreden lassen, die Five Waltzes (Walzer) zu veröffentlichen, die er aus der enorm großen Anzahl an kurzen, zwischen 1923 und 1925 geschriebenen Klavierstücken ausgewählt hatte. Britten schrieb in seinem Vorwort zur Ausgabe von 1970:

1925 entstanden 10 ‘Waltztes’, darunter Petite Valse—traurig, daß mein französisch besser als mein [deutsch] zu sein, scheint. Mehrere davon waren schon davor geschrieben worden. Und weil der Komponist ein ganz normaler kleiner Junge war, sind sie alle recht kindisch (kein junger Mozart, fürchte ich). Aber vielleicht sind sie nützlich, Anfängern oder Ungeübten beim Klavierspiel zu helfen …
