L’anonymat de Gottschalk fut complètement pulvérisé quand l’éditeur choisit d’imprimer sous l’auteur officiel, «Seven Octaves», «L.M. Gottschalk»! Fait saisissant, l’œuvre est dédiée au Général Ulysse S. Grant («un petit homme d’apparence ordinaire» selon la description de Gottschalk, «mince, modeste»). La connaissance de la musique dont faisait preuve Grant est résumée par le bon mot qu’il murmura à Lincoln. Au Président qui commentait favorablement sur la fanfare militaire dirigée par Georges Ives (le père de Charles), il répliqua: «Je ne connais que deux mélodies», dit-il «l’une est ‘Yankee Doodle’ et l’autre non».

Zwar ist „Seven Octaves“ als Komponist angegeben, jedoch wird das Geheimnis schon in der Zeile darunter gelüftet, wo der Verleger den Namen „L.M. Gottschalk“ drucken ließ! Am überraschendsten ist die Widmung an General Ulysses S. Grant (Gottschalk beschrieb ihn als „einen kleinen Mann von gewöhnlicher Erscheinung, schlank und bescheiden“). Grants musikalische Bildung wird in dem Bonmot umrissen, dass er Lincoln gegenüber kundtat, als dieser sich wohlwollend über eine Militärkapelle unter der Leitung von George Ives (der Vater von Charles Ives) äußerte. „Ich kenne nur zwei Melodien“, sagte Grant. „Die eine ist „Yankee Doodle“ und die andere ist es nicht“.
