Purcell’s setting was printed by Anthony Motteux in the April 1694 edition of The Gentleman’s Journal. When the poem was printed in 1720 in A new miscellany of original poems it was subtitled ‘A Song: To Amyntor’. Amintor’s fickleness is well known, and the author is determined that he will not be another person to be taken in by entreaties to love. Purcell’s song is delightfully melodic, similar in style to works by his friend and colleague John Blow.
