Nocturne No 3 in A flat major could have become a typical ‘salon’ piece, but its syncopated accompaniment and delicate cross-rhythms signal something altogether more rarefied. The main theme’s closing motif expands to become the second idea, played by the left hand under one traced line of accompaniment. These dream-like threads ultimately win—perhaps slightly subversively.
