Strictly speaking, this piece is a hymn for Compline in the season of Lent. But the fact that Robert White composed four different settings of this text, in styles ranging from the simple to the elaborate, hints that they also serve to show off his versatility. In this third setting, White provides polyphony only for alternate verses; the others are sung to plainchant.
