Usquequo, Domine must rank as one of the most powerful penitential motet of the period. Scored for SSATTB it was eventually published alongside Requiem Masses. The surface of Usquequo, Domine is faultlessly spacious and sustained, the material not looking on paper – there are few dissonances or suspensions – as though it could bear the weight of these words. Yet it creates an unforgettable atmosphere, the simpler the more passionate, and nowhere more remarkable than at the first inversion chords on ‘dolorem in corde meo’.

Usquequo, Domine compte parmi les motets pénitentiels les plus puissants de son temps. Écrit pour SSATTB, il parut finalement aux côtés des messes de requiem. Usquequo, Domine est, en apparence, impeccablement spacieux et tenu, son matériau ne semblant pas pouvoir, sur le papier du moins – les dissonances et les suspensions sont rares –, supporter le poids de ces mots. L’ensemble n’en crée pas moins une atmosphère inoubliable, d’autant plus passionnée qu’elle est simple, et jamais plus remarquable qu’aux premiers accords renversés, à «dolorem in corde meo».

Usquequo, Domine und Hei mihi, Domine müssen als zwei der ausdrucksvollsten Buß­motetten der Zeit verstanden werden. Sie sind beide für SSATTB angelegt und wurden schließ­lich zusammen mit den Requiemmessen heraus­gegeben. Auf der Oberfläche scheint Usquequo, Domine einwandfrei großzügig und anhaltend angelegt zu sein; auf dem Papier sieht der Notentext nicht so aus – es sind nur wenige Dissonanzen oder Vorhalte zu erkennen – als könne er den Gehalt der Worte wiedergeben. Dennoch sorgt er für eine unvergessliche Atmosphäre, die umso leidenschaftlicher wird, je schlichter das musikalische Material ist; am wirkungsvollsten sind die Akkorde in erster Umkehrung bei „dolorem in corde meo“.
