This song is an interesting example of an ‘art’ song becoming a broadside ballad. The words are by the famous poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674) and the music is by William Lawes (1602–1645). The tune was printed in many instrumental and song collections and was so popular that it was used for other ballads unconnected with the original text.
