Fatamorgana is an early work (1980) and is real musical fantasy. In the first movement, two folk-like melodies vie for attention. The basses represent the relentless heat of the desert while the more wistful lines of the altos reminisce and hallucinate. All the while the dreamy atmosphere is enhanced by the nonchalant commentary floating above in the soprano part. In the second movement the melody of the soprano solo is picked up and echoed by the other voices to the words ‘The sun runs around it’. The last few notes of this movement are thrown around the three soprano parts as again Plakidis creates a texture with free-floating soprano lines offsetting a chorale-like song in the lower voices. If there is something fairytale-like about the text then this could certainly be said of the musical setting. The magical ending to the lines ‘while a glassy-winged dragonfly will make for you a gentle cooling breeze’ has three sopranos singing the same melodic pattern in different rhythms. Plakidis is adept at creating sounds that appear free and improvised and yet are notated with economic ease.

Fatamorgana, une œuvre antérieure (1980), est une véritable fantaisie musicale. Dans le premier mouvement, deux mélodies folklorisantes rivalisent pour attirer l’attention. Les basses symbolisent la chaleur implacable du désert, tandis que les lignes plus mélancoliques des altos évoquent le passé et hallucinent. Pendant tout ce temps, l’atmosphère onirique est rehaussée par le commentaire nonchalant qui flotte au-dessus, au soprano. Dans le second mouvement, la mélodie de la soprano solo est reprise en écho par les autres voix aux mots «Le soleil court autour». Les dernières notes de ce mouvement sont lancées autour des trois parties de soprano quand Plakidis recrée une texture avec des lignes de soprano libres pour compenser un chant façon choral aux voix inférieures. Il se dégage de ce texte et aussi, certainement, de cette musique comme un air de conte de fées. La conclusion magique, aux vers «Alors qu’une libellule aux ailes de verre vous fera une douce brise rafraîchissante», voit trois sopranos chanter le même modèle mélodique à différents rythmes. Plakidis sait créer des sonorités qui semblent libres et improvisées tout en étant notées avec une aisance parcimonieuse.

Fatamorgana ist ein früheres Werk (1980) und eine echte musikalische Fantasie. Im ersten Satz wetteifern zwei volkstümliche Melodien um die Aufmerksamkeit. Die Bässe schildern die erbarmungslose Hitze der Wüste, während die wehmütigeren Altstimmen sich Reminiszenzen und Halluzinationen hingeben. Die verträumte Stimmung wird dabei durch den unbekümmerten, darüber schwebenden Kommentar der Sopranstimme verstärkt. Im zweiten Satz wird die Melodie des Sopransolos von den anderen Stimmen bei den Worten „Die Sonne dreht sich herum“ aufgegriffen und wiederholt. Die letzten Töne dieses Satzes werden zwischen den drei Sopranstimmen herumgewirbelt, wobei Plakidis erneut ein Gewebe aus freischwebenden Sopranlinien über einem choralartigen Lied in den tieferen Stimmen erzeugt. Wenn es bei dem Text etwas Märchenhaftes gibt, so sicherlich in der Vertonung. Im zauberhaften Ende der Zeilen „Als eine Libelle mit gläsernen Flügeln Dir eine sanfte kühlende Brise bringt“ singen drei Soprane das gleiche melodische Muster in verschiedenen Rhythmen. Plakidis ist ein Experte in der Erzeugung von Klängen, die frei und improvisiert zu sein scheinen, und doch mit ökonomischer Leichtigkeit verfaßt wurden.
