The outer contemplative sections of O sacrum convivium are built on small harmonic and melodic fragments and yet a continuous stream of sound is propelled forward over cluster chords and syncopated rhythms. The second half of the text is treated more freely in the middle section, with ‘mens impletur gratia’ set to a quasi-plainsong melody carried upwards through the voice parts. The final section shows considerable skill in the balancing of choral parts as the accompaniment, beginning in the upper voices, subtly descends through the choral range until reaching its conclusion in the luxuriant key of D flat major.

Les méditatives sections extrêmes d’O sacrum convivium reposent sur de petits fragments harmonico-mélodiques, ce qui n’empêche en rien la projection vers l’avant d’un flux sonore continu, par-dessus des accords en clusters et des rythmes syncopés. Dans la section centrale, la seconde moitié du texte est traitée plus librement, avec les mots «mens impletur gratia» exprimés sur une mélodie en quasi-plain-chant véhiculée vers le haut via les parties vocales. La section finale dévoile une considérable maîtrise de l’équilibre des parties chorales quand l’accompagnement, démarrant aux voix supérieures, descend subtilement l’ambitus choral jusqu’à atteindre sa conclusion dans le luxuriant ton de ré bémol majeur.

Die besinnlichen äußeren Abschnitte von O sacrum convivium bauen auf kleinen harmonischen und melodischen Fragmenten auf, doch über Akkordbündel und Synkopen hinweg wird ein kontinuierlicher Klangstrom vorangetrieben. Der zweite Teil des Texts wird im Mittelteil freier behandelt, wobei die Worte „mens impletur gratia“ mit einer durch die Singstimmen hindurch aufwärts getragenen, quasi-liturgischen Gesangsmelodie vertont werden. Der letzte Abschnitt demonstriert beträchtliches Können in der Ausgewogenheit der Chorstimmen, wenn die Begleitung mit den Oberstimmen beginnt und subtil durch den gesamten Chorbereich abwärts bis zum Abschluss in der klangvollen Tonart Des-Dur geführt wird.
