Ohlsson (who won the Chopin International Piano Competition in 1970) gives us accounts of this wondrous repertoire in weighty and commanding style, aristocratic and impulsive (but not lacking light and shade or contemplative contrasts) and, at times, very sensitive and searching. These vivid recordings were made in the second half of the 1990s and have previously appeared on the Arabesque label. They now sit very well in Hyperion’s catalogue’ (Classical Source)
‘Today I finished the Fantasy—and the sky beautiful, my heart sad—but that doesn’t matter at all. If it were otherwise, my existence would perhaps be of no use to anyone.’ Here Chopin unaffectedly admitted in 1841 what salon listeners then and modern audiences now have immediately intuited—that an air of overriding melancholy not only lends expressive force to his creative work, but also identifies it as something uniquely to be revered. Much of the Fantasy, Op 49, seems governed by the sober mood of its opening march, whose minor mode and crisply differentiated rhythms conjure funereal associations. Even when Chopin twice at culminating moments returns to the idea of a march in a major key, a nervous energy prevents the brighter key from seeming triumphant. So, too, the central slow and lyrical theme that interrupts the second progression towards a march in the major marks a turn to the contemplative. That Chopin reminds us of this pensive chorale just before the peroration of the piece serves to confirm the significance of the ‘sad heart’ to the mood of the Fantasy.

«Aujourd’hui, j’ai terminé la Fantaisie—et le ciel est magnifique, mon cœur triste—mais cela n’a aucune importance. Si ce n’était pas le cas, mon existence n’aurait peut-être aucune utilité pour qui que ce soit.» Ici, Chopin admit, sans affectation, en 1841 ce que les auditeurs des salons de son temps et le public moderne d’aujourd’hui ont ressenti d’emblée intuitivement—qu’une mélancolie prépondérante donne non seulement de la force expressive à son œuvre créatrice, mais l’identifie également à quelque chose à révérer éminemment. Une grande partie de la Fantaisie, op.49, semble gouvernée par l’atmosphère grave de sa marche initiale, dont le mode mineur et les rythmes impeccablement différenciés évoquent des idées lugubres. Même lorsque Chopin revient, à deux reprises sur des points culminants, à l’idée de marche dans une tonalité majeure, une énergie fébrile empêche la tonalité plus brillante d’avoir l’air triomphale. En outre, le thème central lent et lyrique qui interrompt la deuxième progression vers une marche en majeur marque un tournant vers la contemplation. Que Chopin nous rappelle ce choral songeur juste avec la péroraison du morceau sert à confirmer l’importance du «cœur triste» pour l’atmosphère de cette Fantaisie.

„Heute habe ich die Fantasie fertiggeschrieben—der Himmel ist heiter, doch mein Herz traurig—aber das macht gar nichts. Wäre es anders, nützte meine Existenz vielleicht niemandem.“ Hier räumte Chopin im Jahre 1841 ganz ungekünstelt ein, was die Salon-Hörerschaft damals und das moderne Publikum heute sofort intuitiv erahnt(e), nämlich dass eine überwiegend melancholische Atmosphäre seinem schöpferischen Werk nicht nur besondere Ausdruckskraft verleiht, sondern es auch in einzigartiger Weise verehrenswert macht. Ein großer Teil der Fantasie, op. 49, scheint von der nüchternen Stimmung des Anfangsmarschs beherrscht zu sein, dessen Molltonalität und klar differenzierte Rhythmen trübselige Assoziationen hervorrufen. Selbst wenn Chopin bei gipfelartigen Momenten zweimal zu dem Konzept eines Marsches in Dur zurückkehrt, hält eine nervöse Energie die hellere Tonart davor zurück, triumphierend aufzutreten. Ebenso kennzeichnet das langsame und lyrische Thema in der Mitte, welches den zweiten Anlauf auf einen Marsch in Dur unterbricht, einen Wechsel zum Beschaulichen. Dass Chopin kurz vor dem musikalischen Schlusswort des Stücks an diesen nachdenklichen Choral erinnert, bestätigt die Bedeutung des „traurigen Herzens“ für die Stimmung der Fantasie.
