Reviews

‘These clearly recorded discs should find a place in every music library in the land!’ (Gramophone)

‘Another abundant, revelatory, superb instalment in what is looming as perhaps the most adventurous, most consistently realized, and grandest project in recording history’ (Fanfare, USA)
The theme which is immediately recognisable as the opening of the Ballade No 1 served Liszt for several album-leaves, some of which, clearly given as private gifts, are absolutely identical to each other. The two Klavierstücke represent the differing texts available, the D flat version being in the same key as the Ballade, and the A flat version being numbered 2 to distinguish it from the completely different piano piece in A flat which shares the same number in the Searle catalogue (recorded in Volume 2 of the present series).
