The Chanson du Béarn is a Béarnaise folk song ‘La haût sus las mountagnes’ (‘High up on the mountains’). On the first page of the music, the title is given as ‘Pastorale du Béarn’. (Both works were reprinted by the British Liszt Society in their 1991 Journal.) The first, a ballad with the most wistful harmonization, is treated to variations in the manner of many of Liszt’s song transcriptions, and the second is given just one variation, with an optional coda—full of tremolos and new harmony—which is much too good to be omitted.

La chanson du Béarn est une chanson folklorique du Béarn, originalement appelée «La haut sus las mountagnes». Sur la première page de la musique, le titre qui lui est attribué est «Pastorale du Béarn». (Les deux morceaux ont été réimprimés par la British Liszt Society dans son journal en 1991.) La première, une ballade à l’harmonisation mélancolique, est soumise à des variations dans le style commun à nombre de transcriptions de chansons de Liszt, et la deuxième n’est sujette qu’à une seule variation, avec un coda facultatif, plein de trémolos et d’une nouvelle harmonie, qui est beaucoup trop bonne pour être ignorée.

(Beide Werke wurden 1991 im Journal der britischen Liszt-Gesellschaft nachgedruckt.) Das erste Stück, eine Ballade mit der wehmütigsten Harmonisierung, wird verschiedenen Variationen in der Art der Liedertranskriptionen Liszts unterzogen, und dem zweiten wird nur eine Variation und ein wahlweise zu spielender Coda—voller Tremolos und neuer Harmonien—gegeben, der viel zu gut ist, um weggelassen zu werden.
