Stefan Blunier (conductor)

Since 2008 Stefan Blunier has been General Music Director of the City of Bonn, where he is Chief Conductor of both the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn and Bonn Opera. Under his charismatic direction a new musical awareness has infused the orchestra and audience and the orchestra is increasingly in demand abroad. A successful tour to China in 2011 was followed by a tour of the USA and an immediate invitation to return in 2016. The orchestra’s recordings under his direction have been recognized with two ECHO Klassik ‘Opera Recording of the Year’ awards for Eugen d’Albert’s Der Golem and Schreker’s Irrelohe.

Blunier’s three years as Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre National de Belgique (2010–2013) included performances in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw as well as in Germany, Austria and Slovenia. He returns to Brussels each season. Other guest-conducting engagements include nearly all the German radio symphony orchestras, Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, Staatsphilharmonie Ludwigshafen, Duisburg Symphony Orchestra as well as many orchestras in Denmark, Belgium, Korea, Switzerland and France.

In the opera house he has conducted productions in Munich, Hamburg, Leipzig, Stuttgart and Berlin (Deutsche Oper and Komische Oper), Montpellier, Oslo, Bern and London. A special interest in late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century repertoire as well as contemporary music has been reflected in his programming, and he has conducted operas such as Irrelohe and Das Spielwerk by Schreker, Szymanowski’s Krol Roger, Cerha’s Der Rattenfänger and the German premiere of Saariaho’s L’amour de loin.

Stefan Blunier was born in Bern, Switzerland, and studied piano, horn, composition and conducting at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. While still a student he founded the Ensemble für Neue Musik Essen and began to make a name for himself both as a conductor and pianist. As a conductor he has risen through the ranks of the German opera houses and has held positions in Mannheim (Associate Chief Conductor) and Darmstadt (Music Director and Chief Conductor, 2001–2008).
