Jane Irwin (mezzo-soprano)

Jane Irwin studied at Lancaster University and the Royal Northern College of Music, winning many prizes including the 1991 Decca Kathleen Ferrier Prize. As a concert and recital singer she has appeared regularly in Britain, Europe and America. In addition to working with a range of leading international orchestras and prominent conductors, she has given recitals at the Châtelet in Paris, in London, Geneva, Aix-en-Provence and Japan. Other important appearances have been with the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Hallé and Mark Elder, the CBSO, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment also with Mark Elder, the BBC Proms, the Berlin Festival and with the NDR Symphony Orchestra. She is a frequent guest at the Edinburgh International Festival. In 1995 she made her debut in a new production of Götterdämmerung at the Royal Opera, returning to sing Suzuki in Madama Butterfly—a role she also sang for Opera North and for Scottish Opera. She sang Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde for English National Opera and made her debut at the Bayreuth Festival in Die Walküre in 2000.
